1) Peace Organizing Meeting: Lockheed Martin Get Lost & Mother's Day Peace Picnic Thursday, April 30 7:00-9:00 PM, at the Bloomfield Centre, 2786 Agricola Street
Please come to discuss what we can do to create a green, peace economy not a war economy in Nova Scotia and to have a Mother's Day Peace Picnic.
Did you know that Lockheed Martin, an American company that is the world’s largest weapons manufacturer, will be receiving $1.8 million in payroll rebates from the Government of Nova Scotia for creating 100 new jobs over the next 5 years? Lockheed Martin is creating those jobs with the $1.4 billion it received last year from the Government of Canada to upgrade the Navy’s combat systems. This is a company that made $3 billion in profit in 2007. Its hellfire missiles and fighter jets have been used to terrorize and kill people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza. Our government should not be giving our tax dollars to a US weapons company. Dalhousie University should not be accepting money from Lockheed Martin. This meeting is organized by the Halifax Peace Coalition http://www.hfxpeace.chebucto.org/
2)The Canadian Department of Peace Initiative (CDPI) Presents: The Peace Option for the 21st Century
Saturday, May 9, 1 pm – 2:30 pm, at the Dalhousie Multifaith Centre (1321 Edward St.)
Presented by: Theresa Dunn, Co-Chair, Pan Canadian Department of Peace Initiative. CDPI is committed to the establishment of a Department of Peace within the Government of Canada. The mandate of the Minister of Peace would be to reinvigorate Canada’s role as a peacekeeper and peacebuilder in the world.
Our discussion on May 9th will detail the evolution of the CDPI over the years to bring this citizen’s movement to the national voice it is today. We will also focus on our goal to form a culture of peace in Canada, and what that choice will mean for our future.
